The journey of the founder of Motsho
Mir Tamiz Ahmad Shazan left a stable banking career and entered the seafood market, founding Mutshu with Mahir Abrar Nikat and Tasin Ishmam Ahmad. Their mission is to provide world-class export seafood to the local Bangladeshi market. Despite the country’s growing seafood exports, the local market remains largely untouched, with a market size of $19.4 billion by 2023. Serving more than 30,000 customers, Motsho bridges this gap and plays an important role in The domestic seafood industry is changing.
Mucho’s journey began in 2021, shortly after the Covid-19 pandemic. Before Motsho, Shezan, Rafat Hauque and Nikhat launched Seafresh, a precursor to Motsho. Realizing the potential for growth and development, they formed Mutshu with a new team in order to make a greater impact.
A significant milestone for Motsho was its appearance on “Shark Tank Bangladesh”, where the founders secured a deal of BDT 10 million (1.0 crore) from all the sharks, a rare achievement in the history of the show globally. The founders credit the show for providing countless guidance and support that helped them achieve this remarkable success.
Motsho’s innovative approach addresses the complexities of the local seafood supply chain. Typically, deep-sea fishing vessels catch seafood mainly for export, with only a small portion reaching the local market. Local seafood often lacks export quality and competitive prices due to complex supply chains. Motsho bridges this gap by sourcing seafood directly from deep-sea fishing vessels through designated agreements. This direct purchase allows Motsho to offer better prices and ensures that high quality products are available through stores, superstores and online platforms.
Motsho’s founders’ entrepreneurial journey is driven by the desire to create something impactful. Shazan, who left a stable banking career and co-founded Motsho, highlights the challenges they faced, from understanding fish quality and supply chain intricacies to dealing with errant employees and competitive market dynamics. Shazan explains: “We faced many setbacks during our journey. However, our dedication to our mission kept us going. We took the necessary steps to overcome challenges by engaging in every aspect and learning from We did market realities.” He recalls instances where competitors tried to undermine their efforts, such as removing Motsho products from display in supershops through collusion. Despite these obstacles, Mutsho persevered by adapting and finding innovative solutions.
One of Motsho’s unique selling points is the blast-freeze cooling method that prevents bacterial growth and ensures export quality. This meticulous attention to quality has earned positive feedback from clients and customers. Prominent clients, including five-star hotels and chain stores, were impressed by the founders’ passion, professionalism and the superior quality of Motsho’s seafood. This has helped them retain significant business from top hotels and other major clients.
Motsho also differentiates itself through innovative product offerings. They offer a variety of packages to suit different needs, such as iftar fish kebab packages, Ramadan packages, cat food packages, etc. These innovative packages cater to diverse customer preferences and increase their market appeal.
Unlike many entrepreneurs who choose familiar industries such as technology or services, Motsho’s founders entered the challenging marine ecosystem. Their vision goes beyond offering premium seafood. Their goal is to establish a fish processing plant to facilitate exports. Currently, Motsho is running a store in Uttara and has a presence in Dhaka and Chattogram. They plan to expand to major areas across Bangladesh soon.
Reflecting on her journey, Shazan recalls her father’s advice: “Make sure you are good to society and live as a good person. Our heritage as good souls is the most important indicator of success.” This philosophy underpins Motsho’s mission and drives their commitment to excellence and social impact.
Mucho’s journey from a post-Covid startup to a game-changer in the Bangladeshi seafood market is a testament to the power of innovation, persistence and passion. Addressing local market gaps and ensuring high quality seafood, Motsho is not only a business but a pioneering force in Bangladesh’s seafood industry.
